Farewell to Broedplaats Lely: ‘Leaving Space’ Exhibition Celebrates Iconic Cultural Hub

Amsterdam, September 2024 — After seven years of offering affordable spaces for over 50 artists, the main building of Broedplaats Lely will close its doors on October 11, 2024. To mark this occasion, resident artists are hosting “Leaving Space,” a two-week exhibition exploring themes of community, gentrification, and precarious living. The exhibition runs from September 21 to October 4, 2024.

About the Exhibition “Leaving Space” showcases over 40 artists through works, performances, workshops, and a panel discussion. The exhibition engages with the idea of ‘leaving space’—both vacating a physical place and creating room for new ideas or people. It encapsulates both the struggle of being displaced, the opportunities that the Lely has offered its habitants/frequenters and the possibilities the generous gesture of letting others enter can bring. Themes include gentrification, precarity, community, and transformation, all to be experienced at this exhibition within the very spaces that nurtured these creatives.
