Reconstructing ‘Peace’

“An important part of Soviet urban planning was the transmission of ideological messages by embedding images and text in architecture. Public institutions (cinemas, restaurants, hotels) had clear and expressive names that reflected Soviet and universal values: Kosmos (Space), Druzhba (Friendship), Saliut (Salute), Molodist (Youth), and others. Many of these institutions have remained, but their names have lost their political undertones and are now just words. But how will they be interpreted by future generations living in a world more turbulent than during the Arms Race, when the hotel Myr (Peace) was built in Kyiv’s Holosiyivskyi district? And can one simply restore the meaning of the word ‘peace’ – in the way old buildings are restored – in the country where the war is taking place? These questions were the basis of the artist Anna Kakhiani’s film documenting the symbolic action of wrapping the hotel’s rooftop sign in the construction netting with quotes from the Aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba’s book The Art of Peace.” Lizaveta German
